Mahakala is a spirit or god from Tibetan Buddhism found in Tibet, Bhutan & Northern Nepal.The masks serve to ward off evil spirits and are among the most important symbols of Tibetan Buddhism. The skulls embody the victory over the five emotional obstacles of doubt, restlessness, sluggishness, aversion and desire.One generally sees these masks present with five skulls although examples with three are also present as this one. The third eye in the mask symbolizes wisdom.
