Early 1900's Monogrammed CPR Heavy Square Silver Tray

A wonderful early 1900's monogrammed Canadian Pacific Railway heavy silver tray. I love their style, simple without fuss, a defined round edge & just a bit of elegance with the stylized CPR monogram.

This specific type of square platter is historically referred to as an underplate or a base platter. It was used on dining cars to catch spills underneath hot individual tureens, teapots, or small entrée dishes while trains navigated high-speed curves through the Canadian Rockies. In addition to dominating luxury car serviced, they were also used in CPR hotels such as the Château Frontenac or Banff Springs from the turn of the century through the 1920's.
