A beautiful & rare antique Doulton Lambeth stoneware biscuit barrel incised with a family of lions by Hanna Barlow. Accents of deep blue, green & caramel. The detail on the lions is wonderful, their expressions enigmatic, the colours reminding one of Africa.
A silver plated lid remains in it's original patina but would shine up beautifully if so desired. I was instantly taken back to the wonderful film 'Born Free' (clearly dating myself with this recollection) but a film & it's song that has always stayed with me.
The base has impressed marks for Doulton Lambeth, 1883, Hanna Barlows initials as well as other reference numbers. Her initials are also incised on the side beneath then. The silver lid has no marks. It has one teeny ding to one side. The jar measures 8 3/4" h. $1800.00.
