A fabulous circa 60's rare carved wood owl by Don S Shoemaker. Great character & a wonderful form.
No label on base. Age hairline to top back of head. Measures 11.5" h x 5.5" x 3."
Shoemaker (1919-1990) studied art in the 1930's at the Art Institute of Chicago. While on honeymoon in Mexico in the 1940's he fell in love with Mexico, moving to Santa Maria de Guido, overseeing the City of Morelia in Michoacán in the late 40's. Inspired by the tropical woods of the country, he began to manufacture furniture eventually employing 100 artisans, the company called Señal S.A. His furniture was exported to cities throughout the States as well as being sold locally. In addition to the furniture he also decorative objects, service ware & boxes.
