A wonderful antique carved giltwood Burmese Mandalay figure of Moggallana, one of Buddha's two chief disciples. Wood in original paint, with a gorgeous patina, he has a wonderful tranquil pressence, both contemplative & peaceful.
His robe is highlighted with bands of moulded lacquer relief work, known as thayo work which is arrayed in decorative scrolls. The thayo patterns have been further inset with glass roundels (a form of decoration known as hman-zi- shwei-cha).
Age related wear to the gilt & one age related small split to the back foot. He measures 9" x 6" x 7.5"
