About the artist: Throughout her life, Charlotte Knapp was an avid painter. She won a scholarship in her early years which allowed her to study art in Budapest. During World War 2, she was arrested in Hungary & placed in a detention center. Upon learning that she was soon to be deported, she managed to escape. A Romanian police officer discovered her in the woods trying to make it across the border to Romania. His intention was to turn her in but they began a conversation. He explained that he wanted to marry his girlfriend but didn't have the money to do so. Charlotte offered her ring in exchange for safe passage across the border. It worked. The officer married. Most importantly Charlotte made it to safety. In 1950, she moved with her husband & young son to Israel where she furthered her art studies as well as undertook ceramics. The family emigrated to Montreal in 1957, before finally settling in Toronto. Knapp exhibited on a very small scale. Her body of work was prolific and also vastly varied in its style. From finely executed stilllife's through florals, landscapes, cityscapes and expressionist abstracts.
