An exceptionally rare antique brass large shallow dish with central motif depicting a skull & cross bones. The skull & crossbones beautifully done. Although difficult to date, this is likely from Nuremberg in Bavaria & or the Netherlands & could be as early as the mid 1500's. Dishes such as these, are often referred to by collectors as alms dishes, however they were originally made for use in the home. In the late 17th century when they started to go out of fashion, many basins were then donated to churches, where they were used as alms dishes, thus the reference. Many had coats of arms or mythological images as the central motif. With the skull & crossbones, possibly this was a momento mori although I prefer links to pirates than reminders of the inevitability of death. A wonderful & very rare piece.
Measuring 12 3/8" w x 1 1/4" h, These were sometimes used on the walls to reflect the candlelight and this one would be superb.
