An exemplary circa 1700 William & Mary oak console or sideboard or chest of drawers. It's a piece that as Vervoordt expressed it is "represented by the honesty of it's material & the purity of intent in it's creation." Featuring a T-shaped arrangement of mitre moulded drawers flanked either side by a geometric mitre molded paneled cupboard door on stile supports. This is a piece that has been loved & cared for through the last 3 centuries, a piece that if we are to impart souls on those things that have been created by human hands, then this one checks all the boxes.
It has an exquisite patina, a simple yet elegant, handsome functional form that will assuredly resonate in any room within which it resides. Much loved over the centuries, this being evident through care that has been taken to patch mouse holes, replace the odd runner, a line of later oak running beneath the cabinet top to level the slight dip that comes from the weight of it’s long length.
Forms like this began life as a dresser but in todays world lend themselves particularly well to living, dining & great rooms. Wonderful too in any interior, from a country home though farmhouse, to industrial loft or city dwelling. A brilliant piece to juxtapose with a variety of styles from antique through modern.
In excellent condition with brilliant character wear, some replacements to areas through the years. Old wood worm holes as is to be expected. Original pegged construction. Hardware is early but has been replaced at some point moving from a handle poll to single drop pull. And do look at those exquisite hand forged iron hinges.
